Inspiration was there to be taken from the early risers in the yard this early spring. They captured the light and threw it out again. It's the same impression I took from the art of Leonid Afremov in Christie's (ST)ART blog (thanks Christie). They are concentrators of light and hope and new life.

Every day I pass the Martin Luther King Memorial site and tell myself that I'm going to stop and take some pictures. With the upcoming holiday and the motivation of January's assignment, I finally stopped.

Not sure I followed the above formula; I started with the "not quite enough time" part and then tried to develop a plan. I had had a plan. It was from an idea that derived from an image I saw Joyce create at one of the Santa Barbara workshops I attended in the 90's. It involved a model holding some flowers. Being 2 weeks before Christmas, I just couldn't seem to commandeer any too busy and willing subjects, other than the flowers that I purchased at the DeKalb farmers market. But I typically try to make some artsy prints for gifts, so I have at least forced myself to achieve something, if not greatness.

I hope you all have a wonderful holiday season, filled with the accomplishment of time spent with family and friends. We'll start over in the New Year.

My first blog project

The real reason I started a blog, to commune with my new family of photographers; we seem to have adopted each other and for me, restarted my creative life. I'm truly in work mode, sitting on the couch with

Pearl. The Eagles and Bears on the tv. Pearl lets me know if there's a big play so I can watch the replay. Oh wait, she just went to check out what's in her bowl--must be a commercial. Now I can concentrate on my work here.

At Arch Cape I gained a new appreciation for the art of the tattoo, as well as for the people that wear them, or have them or are one with them. I must admit that I have had my prejudices about tattoos, but some of the most impressive tattoos I have seen have been worn by some of the most impressive people I know. One of my work associates is probably the best nurse in our office, as well as the coolest, who has a tattoo she's had since her teen years. She seems to have grown with the symbolism she attached to it at an early age; it is part of who she is. I am happy to have created a few images that she finds interesting.

I seem to be drawn to the shapes and textures of nature, a fortunate complement to the art she has chosen.

What a challenge this has been. Thank you Crackle for the idea and to all of this great family for the encouragement and camaraderie. I'm looking forward to next month's project and now the beautiful art that awaits at Christie's place

First Photo

My first photo, taken yesterday in Decatur, Ga. What to say? I always thought that if a photo didn't speak for itself, what was the point? Matisse is supposed to have said that all artists should have their tongues cut out. I presume he meant the same thing. Let the work do the talking. Ansel Adams said that he really wasn't good at attaching meaningful words to his images. He said that he knew other photographers who were very good at it. I feel the same way and am envious of those that are good at it. And I certainly do not want to have their tongues cut out. Perhaps Matisse was referring to artists that were trying to "explain" something that just didn't come across in the work itself. That is, a lousy piece of art. Well, I think the lousy speaks for itself too.

So, the point of the blog is not talking about the photographs. They do speak for themselves. So I guess the challenge here is to create words that actually have something to say. Stay tuned and find out, but I do hope you come back at least to look at the pictures.
